Why See Florentine Opera - Venus and Adonis and Dido and Aeneas?
new for this season
Florentine Opera's General Director William Florescu creates a full evening with these two illustrious examples of English Baroque opera. Both originally one-act operas, the tales now sit together in a harmony of romance and tragedy as inspired by the myths and legends of our ancient forefathers.
Venus and Adonis by John Blow
Composed by Blow for King Charles II, Venus and Adonis is a bittersweet love-story that sees Venus plucked by her son Cupid's arrow. Falling immediately head over heels with the hunter Adonis, she learns the true cost of her feelings when he meets his match in the wild boar of the forest.
Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell
Heavily inspired by Blow's work, another Greek myth forms the basis for this sad tale. Telling of Queen Dido and her love Aeneas and how the two are torn apart by the wily tricks of the wicked Sorceress.
