Why see Heilung?

Join the ritual

The forces of metal-folk meet the forces of nature as Nordic world music collective Heilung returns to US shores this year with a brand new tour. Inviting audiences to their 'ritual', you can expect an unmissable immersive experience that blends music, mysticism, and dance as they hit a stage near you!

Describing their sound as 'amplified history from early medieval northern Europe' the collective draws on runic interpretations and texts from the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Viking Age to create something entirely unique. Adding to the effect are elaborate costumes and a plethora of instruments, including deerskin drums, a buffalo horn and a rattle filled with human ashes!

The Heilung Experience

Was so excited when I discovered Heilung would be playing at the Orpheum theater in Phoenix the 29th of September! My husband and I booked our tickets in August and counted the days! We live just outside of Prescott in the community of Dewey/Humboldt AZ. We left early to make the hour and a half trip down the mountain wondering if we would be able to find the theater! Dreading all the one way streets and traffic one usually finds in a big city like Phoenix. Much to our surprise there were plenty of signs guiding us to the location of the theater and all sorts of parking garages in close proximity to the theater! The Heilung experience was everything I dreamed it would be! I've been following this group for the past three years on YouTube and they were every bit as awesome in person! The drumming and chanting took you to a whole different realm. The theater is an amazing work of art. The crowd was great, I hope Heilung comes back so more can enjoy the experience! ... Read more

Less a performance, more an experience

Last night my girlfriend, daughter, and I attended Heilung's performance at the Orpheum theater in Phoenix. I say performance, but that feels like a poor descriptor of what we saw/heard. From the first moment they walked out and smudged the stage/performers, to the end when they closed the same way, Heilung was in ritual mode and never broke it. An atmospheric stage set with dramatic smoke and lighting, thundering percussion, the growls and shrieks and wails of the performers, bodies writhing in ecstatic movement as they danced with fire and animal bones and Iron Age weaponry - this is as close as you will ever get to experiencing a pagan ritual in dark Northern European woods firsthand. At times the audience wasn't sure whether to remain in their seats and take it all in as passive observers, or rise and join the spectacle. At the finale Heilung made the decision for them, with a performer coming into the audience and encouraging active participation as they concluded the ritual. This is an experience worth having for the sheer uniqueness of it - if you have the opportunity I highly recommend. ... Read more
